OUR SOLUTION
So often, a perfectly sound super six asbestos roof is unnecessarily removed and replaced with IBR roofing. Homeowners are told that their roof is not sound anymore and is a health hazard to us and the environment.
In a number of cases, this can be true but before the owner embarks on this expensive exercise, they should get an approved asbestos consultant
to give them a professional opinion. Getting the correct advice as to the actual state of the roof could save many thousands of rands in asbestos roof replacement. You will find that existing asbestos roofs have probably been in place for many years and the material has weathered with no corrosion or breakdown of the substrate.
SO WHAT ARE YOUR ALTERNATIVES?
If your asbestos roof is not breaking down with fibers coming away from the substrate and is still in a sound state, then why not encapsulate the surface. Asbestos does not corrode, create condensation, is a good acoustic insulator and will therefore even withstand salt-laden coastal environments. Because an asbestos roof is subjected to thermal expansion, it is important that you do not apply a rigid protective coating or material such as fiberglass, as this can cause the roof sheets to crack. A flexible protective sealer coating that has memory together with airless paint roof coating is the ideal encapsulation and that is why the roof should first be primed.
When you disturb asbestos roofs, fibers can be released and then inhaled into the lungs. Coating an asbestos roof involves an understanding of the regulatory issues around handling asbestos, as well as getting to the root of the leak and future proofing the structure of the roof. Our asbestos roof coating processes are highly reliable, yet easy to apply and so less expensive than over cladding or roof replacement. They’re the ideal minimum fuss repair solution and deliver exceptional water and chemical resistance.
Our coatings provide a permanent and highly effective waterproofing solution in an easy two-step process. All loose asbestos fibers and lichen are encapsulated and bound with a Primer. Then a coating topcoat gives long-lasting protection and a completely weatherproof, UV and dirt-resistant roof that’s guaranteed to last for many years. When combined, the two components also encapsulate asbestos fibers and reduce the risk of their release, a comforting thought for all those spending time under the roof.
The asbestos substrate and the roof fasteners also require checking before applying with an airless spray, in a two coat application. Roof coatings do not become brittle and will remain flexible for in excess of 10 years. The cost savings can be substantial and a 20-year-old asbestos roof could probably go another 20 years without replacement. The roof coating keeps the asbestos dry so no further moisture ingression and surface growth.
